Welcome to 2012! It’s that recurring time of year when personal resolutions are in the forefront of our minds. Like majority of people I sometimes set goals that are a tad out of reach. This year I’m changing this poorly adopted habit and setting resolutions that are realistic and attainable. Right now life is going swimmingly well, I have very little to complain about and loads to be grateful for. Therefore, I feel it’s time to give back and make a change that can not only benefit me, but will benefit others.
My Resolutions: 1. Decreasing my consumption of bottled water:Over 60 million plastic water bottles are ending up in US landfills daily. Multiply that by days in a year and you get 22 billion water bottles being thrown into landfills yearly. Anyone else blown away? Like many, I find myself drinking 5 or 6 bottles of water a day. That means I’m contributing 2,190 bottles, labels, and caps to these landfills. Clearly this isn’t something to brag about or be proud of.
So what am I going to do? It’s really quite simple. - Choose tap water over bottled water whenever possibleo I’m quite forgetful at times and tend to lose things rather easily, so instead of the constant worry about leaving a nice bottle somewhere, I’m going to cut down from 6 bottles to 1 bottle of Poland Springs a day. Once empty, I will continually refill it. o When I moved into my apartment someone gave me a Brita pitcher. Not sure why I never used it previously but that’s now my go to source for water at home.
2. Adopting a Zen lifestyle:
With the winter winds setting in, it’s quite easy to push aside health and wellness from your daily routine. Unfortunately, this is the battle I’ve been facing on a recurring basis. Enough is enough! I will no longer let the winter blues and my lazy moods win. For the longest time I’ve been an avid Pilates and yoga buff. Not only does it provide my body a sense of peace, makes me feel taller, gets my blood circulating, but my body always looks stellar when I do it on a routine basis.
What I’m going to do?- Creating a routine by finding the class, instructor and set days to go.- Enlist a buddy. Having a support system and a key motivator allows us to share our resolutions. The more publicly you proclaim your resolutions, the more likely you are to stay on course.
3. Spend more time with family and friends
The holidays are just about over and many of you who traveled to visit family are soon set to make the trek back home. I trudged back to Manhattan at the beginning of this week and boy did I struggle. I have a brother who lives in California, a sister who is shacking up in Colorado, and parents who are embracing southern living in Texas. I know what you’re thinking, awesome places to visit. In some ways, yes, this is truly a blessing especially when I get to visit them; however, I find it harder to sometimes stay in touch because of the distance.
So what am I going to do?- IChat, Skype, Face timing: I’m not a big fan of talking on the phone; definitely a texter, but oddly enough I really enjoy video chatting. Possibly because it feels more like talking to someone who’s actually in the room and usually because I’m home and on my comfortable couch. Anyways, now that social media is extremely accessible I will opt to ichat, facetime, or skype whenever I’m vegging out around my apartment- Make a pact. My parents are very good about making the effort to contact me, probably better than I do (sorry for that mom and pop). On my last trip home to Texas my dad and I made a promise to one another. We will only go two months without seeing each other. This has involved more planning and scheduling things in advance but it’s worked so far! We spent the holiday season and our new years in Florida together, and he is coming to New York January 28th.
All three resolutions are very attainable and realistic for me. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions are I hope you can commit and achieve them all. Cheers to you, and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!
